Remote Keyfob

Can a Audi keyfob be repaired?

I bought an Audi A4 1998 model yesterday and it only came with one key. It has one button on it, presumably for the central locking (possibly also for the immobiliser?). While the key works fine to start the car and lock/unlock the doors (but only from the passenger side rather annoyingly) the button does nothing at all. I went to Halfords to replace the battery in the keyfob, but that hasn't helped.

I have checked at an Audi dealer and a replacement key costs over £100!! This is because the transponder(?) has to be reset on the computer. But the thing is the key is obviously doing it's job, as the car is driving, but for pure ease of use I want the remote central locking to work (getting two kids into the car is a lot easier if you don't have to put them both down to manually unlock the door!).

So can the key just be repaired rather than reset and replaced? And if so does anyone know who might be able to do it (I'm in Bournemouth) and an idea of the cost? Thanks in advance.

You said that the key opens the passenger door but not the driver? It may be you have a bad door lock actuator. Have that checked before you buy a new key. As far as I know the key can not be repaired. Also before you buy the key find out if the price includes programing it to your car. In the US it does not and usually cost an other $100 or so.
