security guard to stop the powers supermarket.?

Yesterday I was leaving a supermarket (UK). The alarm went off as I passed through the exit / entrance. The security guard asked me to stop and follow him with my purchases. At the same time, he also asked a young couple in front of me. I refused to go with him as I had done nothing wrong. In the meantime, the young couple had happened. I then pointed out custody that his alarm was going as other customers entered the store obviously a malfunction. Was I within my rights to refuse to go with him. Do these people "stop and search" powers? If I had been detained by force would it have been arrested and imprisoned? Thank you.

If he asked you to stop and go with him and you refused, then others have lived and the alarm kept coming go, then he could have used some common sense to understand that it may have been a malfunction. What we used was his instinct. A person usually refuses to be detained when they have something to hide. If you had simply said 'no problem, you would have probably been on your way, just like the couple in front of you. So it was not illegal for him to hold you back because he had a motive.
