Technical movie production question. How to synchronize audio and video?

Hi, I have a little panasonic dmc-tz7. I wish to record some video footage and with a separate microphone, record the audio separately (of course the camera will still record audio, but I will edit that out later).
When i go to put the movie together I would obviously like the audio to match up.

I will record mainly in HD format and wanted to know which type of microphone to buy and if conversion between audio types is possible.

The specs of my camera are

[4:3] VGA: 640 x 480 pixels, 30fps (Motion JPEG) QVGA: 320 x 240 pixels, 30 fps (Motion JPEG) /

[16:9] WVGA: 848 x 480 pixels, 30 fps (Motion JPEG) /

[HD Movie] 1280x720, NTSC Mode: NTSC model: 60p(CCD output is 30p) /

H:13Mbps / L:9Mbps ) / 30fps (Motion JPEG)

can anyone advise me of a good quality microphone to buy which will sync up with my camera or at least a means of conversion?

This is what clappers are for.

Get a set of clappers or make your own, how you use them is simple.
Set your audio recording and your video then hold the clapper infront of the camera and clap it as hard as you can then go on as normal.

When editing, you'll be able to see the clap on the audio waveform and you can easily cut that there.

Then watch your video for when the clapper claps and cut there.

Then simply dump the audio over the video and it's synced!
