How can I make my own automatic gate opener? Out of Household stuff?
I dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on gate openers so i wanted to know how I could make my own. (I already have a sliding gate installed... Please help!

Chain drive garage opener would be your best bet to pull the gate open and slide it closed. You can also use a "worm screw" design to pull the gate along.. In an outdoor environment its really important to keep all mechanical surfaces greased very well. Suggest using marine "open gear" type grease as it doesn't wash out too easy. (really clings to the surfaces)
There's other concerns too. Such as running power out to the opener. (110volt AC) -- This also goes along with power failure concerns. (no power = no open or close) Most garage door openers do have an emergency handle which releases the clip holding the door and allows you to open or close it without electric power. (That way your not trapped in the garage.) STRONGLY suggest keeping this item in place just in case of power failure.
Also, since most garage door openers are mounted inside the garage, you'll have to find a way to weatherproof the opener motor and electronics so that it doesn't short out in the rain or snow.
Its a good idea, just needs tweaking to ensure it keeps working for the long run.
